Voice Acting And Words – The Not Silent Blog 7/7/20
What do you read, my lord? Words, words, words.Polonius & Hamlet
As a voice actor who’s been doing this for a while, I’ve noticed some words I screw up I regularly. Some are inversions…
- all can vs. can all
- also will vs. will also
- just only vs. only just
…and some I just get wrong all the time.
- these vs. those
I’m not sure if it’s a brain thing or a vision thing. Maybe I should get my eyes checked.
Then there are words I’m never sure how to pronounce…
- research: REE-search vs. rih-SEARCH
- detail: DEE-tail vs. dih-TAIL
- presentation: PRE-sentation vs. PREZ-intation
- our: OW-er vs AHR
- integral: IN-tegral vs. in-TEG-ral
- The year 2020: 2000-20 vs 20-20
Which of these are correct in context and which are client preference?
After some research (or is it research?) I’ve discovered that it depends on whether you’re American or British and if it’s a verb or a noun but both pronunciations seem to be interchangeable nowadays. I always go with client preference (if they have one) or whatever just sounds better. For example, my European clients tend to prefer AHR over OW-er, if for no other reason than it sounds less American. 🙂
TIP OF THE WEEK
As a voice actor whose job is to turn words into stories, it’s your job to figure it out. Do your research and ask good questions.
Side-note: never complain on social media about narration copy that’s hard to say. You’re criticizing the writer/author publicly and that’s never a good look. There are some notable exceptions like posting how you “conquered” a crazy medical term like familial hypercholesterolemia, ankylosing spondilitis, etc.
