This blog is called The Good Karma Network Weekly Update. Every once in a while I like to give myself a “renewal of purpose” so to speak, so let’s talk about what karma is, ay?
What is karma?
It depends on who you ask. In Hinduism and Buddhism, karma is the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. According to the TV show “My Name is Earl“, karma is “if you do good stuff, good things will happen to you”. For the sake of this conversation, we’ll define it as: the result of a person’s actions.
When I first started writing the GKN Weekly Update back in 2006, all I wrote about was the few gigs I was booking. It was narcissistic & boring and needless to say, I didn’t have much of a following.
After a while, I realized that karma is about sharing, true sharing. Back then, the only thing I had that was truly worth sharing was my failures. Sounds odd, right? Well, you don’t learn when you succeed; only when you fail. Failure is a sign of wisdom, as they say. Now that I think about it, the only thing I still have that’s worth sharing is my failures. Because failure is what taught me what NOT do with my voiceover career, which I think is even more important than what TO do.
BTW just spouting about how important you think karma is over a latte isn’t gonna get you far. It requires action. What that action is, is up to you.
TIP OF THE WEEK
What actions can you take that will generate good karma? If you contrive to do good things in order to reap karmic benefits, is that really good karma? I’m not sure. What I am sure of is that if you give with no expectations, good things will happen. Not right now, maybe not even for a long time, but it will happen.
NEWS AND NOTES
I got the new Samsung Galaxy S5. It’s pretty! I’m still working on customizing it. Does anyone have suggestions for cool apps?
My next Edge Studio “Business and Money 201” webinar will be this Thursday, May 15 at 8:00 PM EST. The topic: Time Management. I’m gonna talk about how to make sure your day doesn’t degenerate into eating ice cream on the couch and watching re-runs of “Reba”! Click here to sign up. I hope you’ll join us!
Like I said, I took my mom to see Spider-Man 2 and it was pretty bad. The best part was the end credits teaser and no, I’m not telling you what it is!
HAPPY HAPPYS
Happy Mother’s Day! I hope all you sons and daughters out there took care of your moms. For us it was seeing Spider-Man 2 and chowing down on some awesome Portuguese food for dinner. Yummers!
