Voiceovers And Bad Copy – The Not Silent Blog 8/16/16

The new “Suicide Squad” movie was bad. I loved it.

To give you a bit of context, I’m a hard-core DC Comics fan. I have been since the day I bought Issue #5 of “Crisis On Infinite Earths” and saw this panel:

Seeing all of those heroes & villains come together to confront a major threat made my jaw drop. I still get the giggles when I see that image.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Marvel too. Disney has done a fantastic job of building the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and I’ve enjoyed every single film.

When DC got in the game with “Man of Steel” and “Batman v. Superman” they have not quite lived up to expectations for many. Check out my review to read my issues with one of those films. “Suicide Squad” is the third movie in the DCEU and from what I had heard & read it was going to be awful. I saw it anyway with a couple of non-voiceover friends who, like most people, go to the movies to be entertained and don’t bring a laser scalpel. I decided to go in with the same attitude and I had a BLAST.

It was only after I got home and started to think about the movie when it fell apart. Under any level of scrutiny, it’s a bad film. Why? It could have been an amazing film, but it was strangled to death by the Warner Bros. execs. They demanded two cuts of the film: one lighter in tone and one darker. They went with the lighter version. The result: a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

TIP OF THE WEEK

What does this have to do with bad copy?

As voice talents, we get poorly written scripts all the time. As storytellers, it’s our job to make bad copy sound good. If you get bad copy, pretend you’re watching Suicide Squad. Ignore your expectations & judgement. Read it like it’s well-written. Read it to be entertained. Commit to it fully.

Just pretend it’s good!
