Voiceovers and Analytics – The GKN Weekly Update 7/7/15

What has two thumbs and loves analytics? This guy does! (points to self with thumbs)

For me it’s just plain fun. Spreadsheets, crunching numbers, whoo hoo! Those of you who don’t know me well are like, what’s wrong with this guy? Those of you who do know me well are just nodding along, also wondering what’s wrong with this guy.

Why do I love it so? Professionally, it helps me gauge my marketing and ergonomic efforts so I can be more efficient. Personally, it’s a mechanism to help me feel like I have a semblance of control over a wildly unpredictable career that is nigh impossible to control.

Many of my fellow voicers do little or no analytics and basically throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks. A precious few do even more analyzing than I do and meticulously track auditions, client churn, and more. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Who knows?

TIP OF THE WEEK

If you are wondering, “Tom, what can I do to analyze my voiceover career without feeling like Hermes from Futurama?” (for you old people, that’s an uber-bureaucratic cartoon character), here’s a simple one. Every time you’re contacted by a potential client, ask them how they found you.

If they discovered you on Google, that may tell you something about your SEO efforts. If they saw that postcard you sent, that may speak well of your recent marketing campaign.

Here’s a metric that will bake your noodle: almost 50% of the voiceover gigs I booked in 2014 came from a peer-generated referral. Crazy, right? What does that mean? It means I have awesome friends who are thinking of me and I always try to be the same kind of friend to them.

Agents? Pah! Casting sites? Pfft! Friends. That’s my secret to success.

NEWS AND NOTES!

I had the pleasure of narrating six of them. Thanks to Infinivox for allowing me to take part in yet another amazing compilation of stories.

HAPPY HAPPYS!

Happy Umbrella Cover Day and Don’t Step On A Bee Day! I accidentally did that once when I was a kid and it was not pleasant for both me and the bee…
