Voiceovers and Actionable Items – The GKN Update 1/12/16

Last week we talked about how to set your goals for 2016. If you didn’t read it or need a refresher, clearly you weren’t paying attention. You can read last week’s blog entry here. This week we’re going to talk about Actionable Items.

For a long time I didn’t understand the difference between a goal and an Actionable Item. Once I was able to parse it my life became much easier on a Systems of Thought level. Having all the day-to-day as well as big picture crap in my head in an organized way keeps me sane. Well, as sane as I can manage.

A Goal is something to be achieved.

An Actionable Item is a task designed to help achieve a Goal.

Here’s an example…

Improving the quality of your home recording setup is a goal. Buying a new microphone is an Actionable Item. Upgrading your recording software is another Actionable Item. These are specific goals and tasks, which is why they are tangible & achievable.

The goal “to be a better voice talent” is nice, but it’s vague. Vague goals will give you vague results. Specific goals will give you specific results. That’s why New Year’s Resolutions tend to fail. That and you’re usually hammered when you make them so they don’t count, right?

TIP OF THE WEEK

Do you have your list of 2016 goals handy? Take a look at them and determine which are actual goals as opposed to Actionable Items. Remove all the Actionable Items and make a separate list. Now, look at your two lists. Do you have every Actionable Item you need to achieve every goal? If not, write them down. Got all that straightened out? Good!

Next week we’ll talk about what to with that daunting list of Actionable Items. Don’t worry, everything’s gonna be alright…
