GKN Weekly Update 11/14/11

Good afternoon, folks! It’s pretty darn lovely here in New Jersey today. I wish I felt as lovely…

That’s right, kids, I’m sick. Or at least on the tail-end of being sick. I was laid up with a cold all of last week and my voice was messed up for four days. On Monday I sounded like Barry White. On Tuesday I sounded like James Earl Jones. On Wednesday I sounded like, I don’t know, Ernie Hudson? Not there’s anything wrong with sounding like a Ghostbuster, but that sound doesn’t pay my bills, and it certainly doesn’t work when you have a deadline for an audiobook and it doesn’t match the work you previously did.

So, I then discovered the wonders of the Neti Pot. Man, does that thing work! I like to call it self-waterboarding. Let me tell you, the first split-second of doing it was horrifying (oh my God I’m drowning! Help! HELP!!!), but then it wasn’t so bad. I was able to finish “Common Nonsense” before the deadline. Thanks Neti Pot!

Okay, so I made an audiobook trailer for BSG. I did it on Adobe Premiere and it’s the first time I’ve put together a video so please be kind. Here it is:

Please Like, Share, Tweet, and do all that other good stuff with it!

Also, Game-Based Marketing released last week. You can check it out here.

Okay, last thing. Like I said, I finally finished narrating “Common Nonsense” last week. It was exhausting! I’ve done about 40 audiobooks and I’ve never felt so drained after finishing one. I think I know why. As I was narrating it, I would often have emotional reactions to the text. Sometimes I would get angry, sometimes disgusted, and sometimes I burst out laughing. A couple of times I’d have to pause and “shake it off”, so to speak. Especially when I had to narrate some disturbing passages.

TIP OF THE WEEK: I did a little research. Some studies have shown that when people interested in politics (like myself) talk, think, or read about it, there is activity in the amygdala and the ventral striatum. In other words, the emotion and reward-related parts of the brain light up. So it put me on a bit of an emotional roller-coaster ride. This is why so many people get so darn irrational! Please keep this in mind when talking politics with friends and family. Fascinating, huh?

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: You can’t fly with the eagles if you keep scratching with the turkeys. Brian Tracy

STUFF!: Movies I watched while I was sick last week and my thoughtful reviews of each:

Blue Valentine – Good

Taken – Bad but Cool

Spy Game – Awesome!
