Happy United Nations Day! Is everyone wearing their powder blues in tribute?
So, I have been hired to narrate the audiobook “Common Nonsense: Glenn Beck and the Triumph of Ignorance”. This is an unauthorized biography and Mr. Beck has referred to it as “Irresponsible…yellow journalism.” Needless to say, this work has turned a few heads!
This is my first biography so I’m making a point to be as objective as possible in my tone, yet serve the story. The book contains strong language, metaphors, and analogies both for and against the subject of the bio, so that high-wire act has been a challenge but a lot of fun at the same time.
For my fellow audiobook narrators: have any of you narrated a controversial book? Did you receive good/bad press or were asked to do an interview? Did you get fan mail? Hate mail? Or is everyone aware that the narrator of the book does not necessarily support the ideas therein and leave you alone? I ask because both the supporters and detractors of Mr. Beck have been, shall we say, vocal?
TIP OF THE WEEK: As a voice talent, your job is to serve the story. Leave your beliefs at the door. If you can’t do that, turn down the job. There’s no shame in that. No one has the right to fault you if you won’t be the messenger because you don’t believe in the message!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. Abraham Lincoln
