GKN 4/9/12 – Do You Tell Your VO Secrets?

Good Afternoon to you on this breezy post-Easter/Passover day! Is everyone still hopped up on Peeps & ham? Afikomen and brisket? To celebrate both holidays, I went to the Nets/Cavaliers game with my mom and some of her friends. Nets won in overtime!

I like to talk. I like to write. I like to share. It’s how I roll. I’m happy to relay what’s going on in my VO career, for better or for worse. I learn from having to think about it, write it down, and come up with a moral of some kind (Tip of the Week). A part of that is deciding what “secrets” to tell.

Some stuff is common knowledge, like “If you join Voice123 and pay $295 per year, you may get more VO work”, or “Put your demos on the main page of your website”. Other stuff is more slick. Either it’s advice from a colleague or something you’ve discovered as a result of experience or chance. Do you:

A) share it all?

B) keep everything to yourself?

C) give out a “Golden Nugget” here and there but keep the hard-earned,  sure-fire secrets to yourself?

“C” seems like the obvious answer. At least to me, anyway. I’m just thankful I have secrets worth keeping!

TIP OF THE WEEK: If you’re a part of the voiceover community, there is no way you got there completely on your own. Somebody had to help you along the way: a coach, an agent, a peer. And I bet one of those people gave you a bit of sage advice that made a real difference. Don’t forget that you were a newbie once, too, and somebody gave you a chance. Give back to the community once in a while!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: You should have to pay to go to church and the theater should be free. George Bernard Shaw

STUFF!: I am SO embarrassed to admit this, but over the weekend  I saw “To Kill a Mockingbird” for the first time. I KNOW, I KNOW, what the hell is wrong with me? Many things, to be sure, but it just never came up. 50 years later, this movie sure does hold up! What an incredible performance by Gregory Peck. Please feel free to admit you haven’t seen it so I don’t feel like such a tool…

From Tom Dheere’s apartment, this is Tom Dheere, GKN News…
