At least he didn’t ask you how to break into voice acting. 😉

Tom, I had a similar thing occur this week, but it wasn’t quite as obnoxious.

It was in relation to a business I’m no longer involved in, not VO. Got an email from someone (who didn’t say how he had gotten my name, but knew we had “common interests”) wanting me to check out his product (a pain relief product, clearly a MLM thing), in case it might be helpful to me or someone I knew.

I did email him back, and politely pointed out that I’m no longer involved in that particular work, and that I really wasn’t interested in the product at all. Thankfully, he was respectful about that, and didn’t push further, and since I asked how he got my name, he revealed he got it from an advanced search on LinkedIn. He also revealed that he had seen that I was now doing VO, but thought this could still be something I’d be interested in.

I felt it was a misuse of LinkedIn. It wasn’t an interrupting call or terribly deceptive, but it still had that element of using what was perceived as “common interests” to get me interested, and I was thinking at first, “Hey, maybe he wants me to do some VO for a commercial for the product” and so I read his email. A small waste of time, and I left feeling a bit yucky. But again, at least it wasn’t a deceptive phone call. Sorry about your interrupted lunch with your friend.

But you did give me something to consider. I do often see phone calls come in from numbers I don’t know, and I don’t answer. Maybe some of those are potential work coming in, and maybe I ought to answer? Seems that when I do, though, it’s usually marketers. So, that’s the question – to answer or not to answer?

I always answer unless I’m in the middle of something that I can’t pull away from. You can always say “No, thank you” and hang up!

[…] Hello and Happy Victoria Day! God save the Queen… Last week I’m having lunch with a friend in New York City and my phone rings. Looking at the Caller ID, I assume its a potential client. I apologize to my friend and take the call.  […]
