Great blog, Tom! I think it is VERY important for us voice talents to mentally defuse, cleanse your mind and take some time off. I know it’s cool to say you’re working on a holiday because you’re so busy but you are going to burn out, if you don’t take time for yourself.

  2. I think Mental Health Days are absolutely essential, especially for freelancers/self-employed folks who work alone and at home. Nobody wants a stressed or burnt-out vo talent! 🙂

Thanks, Terry! The tough part is that since we’re self-employed and not 9-to-5’ers, we don’t have a structure for taking the time off that we need. I recorded two spots, wrote my blog, and worked on the comic book on Labor Day!

Thanks, Christina! Yes, it can definitely affect your performance if you’re burnt out.

  5. Great thoughts, Tom! I must confess, I don’t take nearly as many mental health days as I probably should. I’m just a little too tied up in the day-t0-day work of trying to make a living at this VO thing. As much as I know that I need to recharge the ol’ batteries, it’s hard to look at the decreasing bank account balance and convince myself (let alone my wife and daughter) that it would actually be a *good* idea for me to stop working my tail off every single day that I possibly can and take a little break. The practical side of me says that I can’t afford the time off, while my straining stamina says that I can’t afford to keep working non-stop. How do you take a much-needed break without feeling guilty? Simply telling myself that I’ll feel better — and work more effectively — in the long run doesn’t seem to silence the nagging guilt.

Your body & mind are machines that need to fueled and occasionally taken offline for maintenance. Give them the care that they need and deserve!

Mental health day is Oct 10th aka my birthday. I keep telling people, “you have to be a little crazy to make it in this business” : )

[…] Happy Post Labor Day letdown! Fall is officially unofficially here. And yes, there have been sightings of Halloween and X-Mas stuff in some stores. Does that drive you as bonkers as me? What time is it?  […]
