Interesting comments Tom. There are far too many people in the “performance business” who cannot discriminate between fantasy and reality. We can all dream, aspire and strive to perfect our craft and our business, but in the same way you’re not James Earl Jones… I’m not Alan Rickman… but that reality doesn’t stop us trying though. The fantasy is where someone believes that dreams can be bought with nary a nod at skill, expertise and hard work. There are no magic pills, no super-agents, no networking uber-strategy that will suddenly put someone in the VO “elite”. Explainers, e-learning, corporate, audio-books… these are the bread and butter of the industry and will provide someone with a good living if they work hard at it… and with luck, we’ll all get a smattering of the high-profile prestige gigs as well!

    Well said, Bish!

  3. Great thoughts here Tom. As voice talents, we are business owners and managers. We need to plan, strategize, do our homework, continue to hone our skills, make goals and all with a smile on our faces while keeping our noses to the grindstone. Landing a national gig provides a temporary career high, but the next big kahuna may be miles away, or maybe not. It’s the clients we cultivate, create and discover that are our bread and butter. And – I can’t believe you are old enough to be in this since 1994, you have some great genes!

Thanks, Lynn! Very kind of you to say…
