Dear Tom:
I subscribe to Jeffrey’s comic strip and laughed out loud (and I mean LAUGHED out loud fully, not “lol!!”) when I read that strip…I had a similarly amazing question posed to me, to my face, by a budding voice talent with whom I have a fairly new relationship. We were at a prearranged meeting and he came up to me and asked “So… how much did you make last year in VoiceOver?” After composing myself, I simply answered, “wow, I’m really happy to share my knowledge and experience to try and help you get your VO career going, but I’m sorry, I just can’t tell you that!” he was like, “oh, ok…”
Sheesh!

Wow, Tom, great response! I’m sure I would have just deleted his email, but I’m glad you took the time to thoughtfully respond to him and then blog about it for the rest of us to appreciate and write cartoons about. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to have gotten through to him…

I’ve had people send me their demos and/or want to know how to get started, but this guy’s request is outrageous!

Oh, and I love Voice-overload — he certainly captured the moment (and attitude). Thanks for sharing!

Best tip: stay awake. I haven’t read fiction, but it did read a tome on how to do dental surgery and implants several years ago. I managed to stay awake, but my engineer feel asleep twice! (He shall remain nameless to protect the guilty!)

Re: Stuff: I hear “The Avengers” and think of the British TV series from the ’60s. So how old does that make me?!?!?

The only thing I would caution about using audio/visual computer based media for marketing oneself is that if you have a specific property about your talent that you are attempting to highlight in your track, you cannot control the actual end result of
the clients’ individual speakers, equalizer, video performance, listening environment, etc…

So be cautious of going to the edges of your range.

My skeptical nature sent me straight to Google to see how far down the page GKN was and, to my surprise, it wasn’t GKN. It was your website that came up, maybe halfway down. What a difference a week must make!

I don’t mind sharing because whatever advice I give will be processed through someone else’s body, mind & voice – so it comes out different anyway. All the great actors steal from those who came before them and adapt it to their own method.

Get the good stuff out to everybody.
Been doin’ and coachin’ for half a century, but
get a real kick out of passing it all along. In fact,
your post has prompted me that I should probably
do another Power Marketing Workshop soon. Haven’t
done one for 2 or 3 years now. I do continue to
offer a free evaluation for possible inclusion in the
active casting files for AAAVoiceCasting.
